Choosing a Pilates Mat
If you want to perform Pilates exercises at home, you need a Pilates mat to provide padding and support. Having the right mat helps you get the best workout and reduces the possibility of injury. Several different types of mats are available, and you want to buy the mat that suits you and your workout style best. Consider that mat's thickness, size, grip, and portability.
Thickness:
Mats usually range from 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. The thicker the mat, the more comfortable it is likely to be. However, the mat must also be firm enough to support you while you exercise. The perfect thickness for you will probably depend on several factors, including your fitness level and the type of surface on which you exercise.
Size:
Pilates mats are larger than yoga mats, generally ranging from 70 to 86 inches long, though shorter and longer mats are available. The important thing is to get a mat that's long enough and wide enough for you to stretch out and exercise.
Grip:
A mat should prevent your hands and feet from slipping while you exercise, even when you sweat. It also must have sufficient traction to remain flat on the floor while you exercise. Look at both sides of the mat to check the grip and traction.
Portability:
Consider where you'll be using your mat most often. Roll-up mats are generally cheaper and easier to transport if you plan to take your mat from your home to the gym and back. Some roll-up mats come with straps to keep the mat rolled up while in transport. Folding mats are more expensive but also sturdier, and might be a better choice if you plan to leave your mat in one place.
Types of Mats:
Classic mats, generally about 1/8 inch thick, provide good contact with the floor, but offer less padding than thicker mats. To ensure the mat's stability, make sure the underside provides sufficient traction.
Sticky mats are usually used for yoga, where stability is more of a consideration. Nevertheless, sticky mats can also be used for Pilates exercises. If the mat becomes less sticky over time, you may need to clean it. Wipe it down with a mild solution of soap and water and let it dry.
Extra-thick mats offer superior comfort and padding, up to 1/4 of an inch. They are usually made of dense, durable foam. Make sure you don't sacrifice support; the best extra-thick mats are padded, but still firm.
