Reach For The International Space Station

Mar 15th 2024

Here at SunshineYoga.com, the sun is our inspiration, but we are fascinated by the night sky as well. As most of us know, the sun reflects off the moon, giving us moonlight at night, but it also reflects off the International Space Station (ISS), allowing for spectacular viewing opportunities with the naked eye. The ISS looks like a shooting star, moving quickly from horizon to horizon, making it a must see for anyone, space enthusiast or not.

There are plenty of viewing opportunities at locations across the country, varying from once a month to a few times a week. You can sign up for NASA’s Spot the Station service, and it will notify you when the ISS will be visible from your location for at least a couple of minutes. There is also a map feature that allows you to track the ISS as it makes its way across the night sky. You can also sign up for alerts, typically sent out a few times a month, that tell you when the station’s orbit is nearing your location.

The height the station will appear in the sky will be given by NASA in degrees. When looking for the station, it is easy to make a fist with your hand and use your arm to determine the degrees in the sky. Remember that holding your arm out straight is 90 degrees. Now all you have to do is keep your eyes open and focused on the night sky. The station is very bright and will be hard to miss.

Viewing the ISS is a fun activity to do with friends and family. To make your stargazing more comfortable, grab a few of our blankets to lay out in the yard and relax!
